In pre-Colombian times, the Arawak Indians were first to live on the island and named it Soualiga, Land of Salt. After the discovery of the New World by the European explorers, the island has changed governments and name several times. In their quest to control the West Indies, 'Conquistadores' from Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, Denmark and England left their mark. According to legend, Christopher Columbus named the island on November 11th after Saint Martin of Tours. However, there is no proof that Columbus named the island, and other sources assert that it was a European settler by the name of St Martin, who lived here in the late 16th century. Today, the island is called 'Sint Maarten' in Dutch spelling and 'Saint Martin' in French, Spanish, Italian and English spelling.
